Nursing Home Asset Protection for a Married Couple

Daughter Barbara was referred to SRCWC by a Social Worker in an acute care hospital. Her parents had been living at home with more and more difficulty over the past few years. Her father George was in frail health with advancing Parkinson’s, and his wife Elaine recently suffered a debilitating stroke that made caring for her at home impossible. She would need urgent care provided in a nursing home upon hospital discharge. George wanted to stay living in their family home if possible.

Barbara understood that the situation had changed dramatically for her parents, but was not sure what to do.

Benefits to Barbara and her family:

  • Ensured Elaine’s placement in a high quality nursing home with costs covered by Medicaid.

  • Ensured George could stay in his home safely by advising on appropriate home care services.

  • All legal documents** were in place for future needs pertaining to financial*** and care decisions.

  • Completed the Medicaid application and obtained Medicaid approval for Elaine’s care costs.

  • Protected $150,000 in liquid assets, the couple’s life savings.

  • Protected the family homestead, a $400,000 home.

  • Created a place for the family to continue to go for advice and support, and coordinate any necessary planning changes at no extra cost.

  • Priceless peace of mind for all.

Doris still worked full time and would have to cut her hours or take an extended leave from her job which made access to appropriate benefits a critical element in their decision regarding home care.
